We decided to put the new press into use last weekend and make pure apple juice with the help of the kids.
We picked apples from our neighbour Mrs Read. She has a lovely garden with around six apple trees. We spent a fun couple of hours, climbing step ladders, picking apples and dodging the lama before bringing them back to our garden to press them. The kids had a great time scratting (or “apple murder” as they called it !) then pressing the apples and as well as designing the labels. Finally, later in the evening I pasteurized and bottled the juice.
All the kids gave it the thumbs up and I must admit it tastes rather wonderful !
We plan to sell the juice at our local school’s Festival of food event this weekend to raise money for the school/project. We are calling the juice simply ‘Mrs Read’s Apple Juice’.
Feel free to to turn up at Cherry Gardens School this saturday (2rd Oct) between 12noon and 3pm and try our fantastic juice. We’d love to see you there.
